The new season is starting and for the second time IBB Polonia London are taking part in the CEV Champions League. As a result there are a number of reinforcements. The subsequent transfer hit has been achieved. In the 2020/2021 season the previous MVP of the Champions League has been signed on contract to the club: Marcus Nilsson – the Swedish opposite.
“I am thrilled and looking forward to the upcoming season which I will spend in London with IBB Polonia. I will bring all of my experience and try to help the team in the Champions League. I am also optimistic that I will increase the awareness of the sport in the UK as a result we will increase the passion of British sports fans towards the sport and we will aim to attract prestigious events to the capital where everyone will be able to watch the highest level of sport live once again” said the new opposite of IBB Polonia London, Marcus Nilsson.
“The next volleyball superstar is joining us. Marcus will be an incredible asset to the team as we approach the new season. In a month, we encounter the multiple times Italian Champions, the winners of the Champions League and Club World Champions; Trentino! We also play the current Champions of Serbia – Vojvodina Novi Sad. This is a massive challenge for us, but an equally massive opportunity to promote the club as well as British volleyball. Having such a gem, as Marcus, in our team, I believe that we will play a good game in the Italian arena and we will show that we are a team with ambitions and aspirations for the future” said club Chairman Bartek Luszcz.
Due to the restrictions around the coronavirus, the format of the European competition has changed. In the first round of the CEV Champions League, 18 teams take part and are divided into six pools of three. IBB Polonia London were drawn in the same pool as Trentino Itas and OK Vojvodina Seme Novi Sad. The teams play each other once in the home venue of the Italian sports club between 29th September and 1st October 2020. The pool winner progress to the next round. The matches will be televised. Specific details will be announced on the social media pages of The Club.
Marcus Nilsson was born in 1982 in Torup and has representing his country on numerous occasions. He has played in the elite of Greek, French and Russian clubs. He has played in CEV European events many times, won the CEV Cup in 2006, Champions League in 2013 and won the silver medal in 2009. He was awarded the MVP and Highest Scorer in 2008 of the Greek league and twice won the Champions League MVP in 2009 and 2013.
Previously IBB Polonia London has signed contracts with Polish libero Krzsztof Ignaczak (season 2016/17) – the multiple European and World Champion, then came the Giba (seasons 2018/19 and 2019/20), the Brazilian outside hitter with gold and silver Olympic medals and multiple World Champion and World League medals as well as multiple MVPs for world competitions.
