Opening Weekend: IBB Polonia London Falls to Essex Rebels in Season Opener

2024-10-14
In a highly anticipated start to the season, IBB Polonia London faced Essex Rebels during the opening weekend of the Super League. Last season’s Super League runners-up and bronze medalists, entered the court around 12:45, ready to begin their campaign. However, the Essex Rebels came out firing from the very first whistle, taking control of the game.

The Rebels dominated in key areas, particularly with their powerful serves and solid blocking, leaving IBB Polonia struggling to keep up. Alex Porter’s team consistently built early leads in each set, gaining a few points of advantage early on and maintaining their momentum comfortably until the end.

Despite flashes of brilliance, including a few great defensive digs from the London side, they couldn’t establish enough rhythm, especially in reception and attack. By the time the third set came around, IBB Polonia attempted to rally, but were unable to convert key plays, allowing Essex Rebels to close out the match decisively.

Reflecting on the game, team captain Andrea Maggio commented, “I knew it was going to be a good fight because I knew Essex is a good team and always has been a good team. They were definitely better prepared than us. It’s just the beginning, and I am sure we will have more games to show our game and who we are.”

IBB Polonia London will look to bounce back in their next game as they aim to regain their form and compete for the top spot this season.
