It was a thrilling two days of high-level Under 18 volleyball in Geneva, as ACS Cobham International School’s “The Cougars” made their mark at the second-ever International Schools Sports Competition (ISSC). The competition, held in the vibrant city of Geneva, Switzerland, saw the ACS Cobham teams claim historic victories, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams securing gold medals.
The boys’ team was led by Chris Hykiel, Head of Volleyball at ACS Cobham, while the girls’ team was coached by the accomplished Slawomir Master, a former player for IBB Polonia London and a GB International. The girls’ team also benefitted from the invaluable support of the IBB Polonia London Sports Director, who played a significant role in the preparation and strategy for the tournament. Under their expert guidance, both teams delivered exceptional performances, defeating formidable opponents from Italy, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
In 2023, the girls’ team returned home with gold, while the boys had to settle for silver. This year, however, the Cougars achieved an incredible milestone, securing a historic double gold. It was a moment of immense pride for both players and coaches, as the achievement not only highlighted their outstanding skills and teamwork but also their dedication and hard work throughout the season.
What made the victory even more impressive was the diverse mix of players within both teams. Some players had been involved in volleyball for several years, while others were new to the sport, having switched from basketball to join the successful programme. This blend of experience and fresh talent played a pivotal role in the Cougars’ remarkable success.
After an action-packed tournament, both teams are now taking a well-earned break to focus on their studies. However, they will soon return to training, gearing up for the upcoming spring and summer season of beach volleyball. Looking ahead, the fourth edition of the ACS Cobham International School Volleyball Tournament will take place in May 2025, with the teams eager to defend their medals and trophies in what promises to be another exciting competition.
For now, the Cougars can revel in their historic achievements, knowing that their hard work and dedication have led to an unforgettable double gold in Geneva.
