Still unbeaten, Greg Niski’s IBB Polonia took on the University of Nottingham.
It was an emotional day, and not only because of the volleyball on show. Before the game, both teams and the good sized crowd stood together for a minute to applaud and honour the life of Maciek Chodzko-Zajko; a friend of The Club, volleyball fanatic and well respected referee who passed away a few days before.
The squad for Sunday was Diego Tamburini as setter, Dahmane Bentiti at opposite, Andrea Maggio and Mihail Stoev played outside and Ephraim Mills and Vaidas Audickas in the middle with Filipi Rodrigues as libero. The first set was over in a flash for the hosts with great serving from Stoev and Audickas giving a significant lead to IBB Polonia London. The defence was spectacular and Diego Tamburini had an excellent day controlling the net. The first set ended 25-17 for IBB Polonia London
Nottingham decided they wanted to prolong their stay in London and threw everything at the home team with some solid serving and blocking and took the set confidently despite fervent support from the adoring fans.
The third and fourth sets were over before the dust settled with exceptional serving and attacking from every zone imaginable. It gave Niski a chance to see all of his players in action in different positions. It meant that a variety of combinations and options are available to him as the season progresses.
MVP was Diego Tamburini.
That makes five wins from five in all competitions. Next weekend IBB Polonia London play Brazukas in the National Cup. The game will be at Northolt High School at 4.30pm.
